DeStefano gives State of the City

(New Haven-WTNH, Feb. 2, 2004 10:30 PM) _ He's planning to run for governor but right now his top priority is New Haven.

Tonight Mayor John DeStefano delivered his eleventh state of the city address.

On the evening of Mayor DeStefano's state of the city speech, we asked local residents shopping at shaws to put aside their grocery lists and list their thoughts on how New Haven is doing.

Doris Barber says,"I see a lot of the housing the parks the streets."

Cleo Peterson says,"A lot of companies are coming in."

Mike Nixon says,"As far as jobs, I can't say we're doing well there."

At City Hall this Monday night, Mayor DeStefano had his own list of the Elm cities accomplishments this year.

"We've seen the blighted houses go down the downtown is a great place to be and the opening of schools."

Homicides are down, $900 million in venture capital is coming into New Haven, yet some residents feel a gap in New Haven's changing landscape.

Maude Lewis says,"There's no mall there, there's No Coliseum!"

This state of the city also had an eye looking towards the future.

Mayor DeStefano has made it clear he's interested in running for Governor in 2006.

Tonight the mayor talked about cleaning up politics and took a direct swipe at the governor and other politicians.

"Our business is getting a bad name names like Ganim, Sylvester, Giordano and now the governor it's time for campaign finance reform."

When asked if tonight's speech was a spring board for a possible gubernatorial run? the mayor would only say.

"It's about New Haven but so many ways prescribed by the state."
