New Haven coliseum topic of aldermen meeting

Should it stay or should it go? New Haven's empty coliseum has filled the city with a lot of controversy. New Haven's Board of Aldermen met in an effort to move forward with a decision.

In the shadows of the Coliseum a new restaurant arises.

The manager is building Avellino's from the ground up. This as city aldermen vote to tear down the coliseum and redevelop the sight.

Lorenzo Gaudioso, Avellino's, says,"The main reason we chose this location is because we are in great company, just between the business popping up there is an economic boom going on."

For Miso, an already established Japanese restaurant, they hope the wrecking ball doesn't wreck business. Construction won't be finished until 2009.

Ming Lau, Miso, says,"It's going to be long, but I believe it's like any other project, it's going to take years to finish it. I just hope they do it as soon as they can."

But the pay off will be huge. Gateway College will bring in 11,000 students. That's 11,000 potential new customers.

There will be an ice skating rink, five parking garages and a brand new Long Wharf theater.

"As we have learned our audience is looking for a complete theater experience, which includes dining options. strolling down the street and shopping."

"We've got an opportunity to do some commercial development, put the Long Wharf Theater there. Do some more housing, those are all good things, jobs taxes, that's what we want to accomplish here," says Mayor John DeStefano.

Even with five city funded parking facilities, people we talked to were a little nervous about where they were going to put their car.
