Lights out for the New Haven Coliseum

(New Haven-WTNH, Aug. 26, 2002 10:20 PM ) _ The New Haven Coliseum hosted its last official event Monday, as it prepares to shut down.

Local 217, the union representing hotel and restaurant workers, wants a promise of severance pay and jobs when the site reopens.

Monday is the last hurrah for the New Haven Coliseum and the 41-part-time concession workers who work there. A number of the workers have earned a living working the concerts and sporting events for years, which is why their union is fighting for some sort of guarantee.

The building, owned by the city, is managed by a philadelphia-based contractor named SMG. SMG was given the union's proposal a few weeks ago and has reportedly not responded.

The coliseum is 30-years-old and is being shut down because of financial problems. City planners have suggested the site could become the future home for the Long Wharf Theatre or possibly a hotel and conference center. At this point nothing is set in stone.

The final main event was World Wrestling Entertainment. Even they are sad to see the building close.

"Our fans have always been really responsive and great. That being the case we hate to see it go," says The Hurricane.

In June, the mayor announced it was simply too costly to keep the aging complex open and that tearing it down would save New Haven millions of dollars.
