Coliseum items going, going, gone

(New Haven-WTNH, Sept. 19, 2002 6:50 PM) _ Going once, going twice, sold to the highest bidder who wants a part of New Haven's history.

Seats, refrigerators, popcorn machines and even the score board hit the auction block at the shutdown New Haven Coliseum Thursday.

Small business owners were among the buyers. For them the auction is a way to buy some supplies and some history.

"We like to buy stuff in town," John Carmity said. "Family owned operations are important to us because we're small. We like to keep it that way."

"I'm looking for some little things to hang around the restaurant," Vinny Gagliardi said. "I own a restaurant."

The coliseum shut down after the city discovered it would cost more to keep the complex open than to close it down.
