LETTER - New Haven Register - September 21, 2002
Coliseum As A Memorial Is Real Issue

The New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum is just that, a veterans memorial, so named to honor all veterans who paid the supreme price in defense of our great country.

The plaque proudly hung in the Coliseum reads: "One of the great responsibilities of democracy is to remember the deeds, the commitment and the sacrifices of those who have battled to preserve human rights. May this plaque serve as a memorial for the sons of New Haven who were among the thousands of Americans for whom the sacrifice was supreme."

The entire Coliseum should remain standing, not only for its architectural aesthetics and historical meaning, but to serve as a living, vibrant reminder for the origins of its name.

If the building is not in use, perhaps the twin helix towers could be refurbished to include thousands of candlelike lights and serve as our Twin Towers Veterans Memorial at the New Haven Coliseum.

The New Haven Veterans Memorial Coliseum serves as an urban monument to all veterans past and present, living or deceased. Whether they died engaged in combat or of old age in a bed, we owe each our never ending love, respect, compassion, and remembrance.

City Hall's deafening silence on this matter is a complete disgrace.
